School Daze–Tips to Beat the Stress

August 28, 2009

Hi Moms and Dads,

As if life weren’t stressful enough, it’s back to school days! While most of the focus is on how to help kids adjust to their new teachers and schools, I say, put the oxygen mask on yourself first!  I always dreaded the start of a new school year, because it meant the start of my second shift, nighttime job: Homework Mater Master.  Have you noticed that homework in this era (as opposed to the Pleistocene era when I was growing up) has gotten much more demanding?  For parents, I mean. Sometimes I found my homework job more challenging than my day job of psychotherapist, and sometime writer.

And the homework challenge got added into the chore wars, the “it’s not fair,” that this is my job (and not my husband’s).  Homework was my job, because like it or not, I was better at writing, editing, and helping research theme reports than my husband was.  So it wasn’t equitable. Whoever said life would be fair?  But in order to salvage a happy marriage, we had to balance this act. Here’s what it took:  I had to practice radical acceptance—I was better at this arena, my husband was better at others.  I was doing more, so I got to ask for my terms of consideration.  I needed a boatload of appreciation, and  less grocery shopping, cooking weekday dinners, and more downtime on the weekend, while he ran the kids around to their activities.  In this way, we both felt like we were pitching in as we could.  Life was fair again, and homework was done.  The kids never knew that we were as happy for the school year to end as they were.  And as the new school year starts, I’m planning to graciously help with homework, and eat a lot of home-cooked meals (honey–that means you).

    B. Thank you for this wonderful entry. As school approaches – I am reminded of the same anxiety. It actually kept me up last night. Your blog was very timely and reminded me to calm down, talk with my husband and take a deep breath.
